What if two good guys wrestled for nothing more than good sportsmanship? And what if a good guy wins for a change? Enter Christian Taylor and Austin Cooper.
SPOILER ALERT: I highly recommend viewing this match in its entirety before reading this post.
The Backstory
The Heel-Jobber / Hero-Villain dynamic is a tried and true formula that's a classic for a reason; it just works on so many levels. Now this particular match flips that and asks, can gay wrestling work without someone getting off? Now I don't only mean physically getting off, but does gay wrestling work without the gratification of subjugation and humiliating your opponent?
I love the match up here: Austin built like a tank and Christian strutting like a model on a photo shoot.
The two even start with friendly compliments to each other. "I'm excited to wrestle you" "Nice, me too" "You look pretty tough online".
The Action
Christian and Austin battle each other in the nicest possible way. Saying things like, "I don't want to hurt you man" and "You're pretty good competition, you know that?" to each other.
At one point, the fight heats up with both exchanging cheap shots, only to cool down again. These two simply can't go full villain on each other.
The Moment
These two are roughly tied by the end of the match. Both guys not so much trying to battle for top but to see how good they can wrestle. This might be one of the few wrestling matches absent any low blows or low antics.
In the end, one man has simply a tiny bit more endurance than the other and really this could've gone either way. But all that aside, what truly makes this match is that sight of Christian victorious; it is truly a moment to behold. One of his few, but well deserved triumphs. Now the guy can brag that he took down Austin, the powerhouse himself, and still remained a good guy.
